It is amazing how sports
can provoke such indescribable sensations in us. I know this is not a blog
about sports, but I myself as a sports’ lover cannot overlook what happened
last Sunday. To be honest, I didn’t follow football this season but I did watch
three fantastic matches which made me regret being so alienated for so long.
The epic game between New Orleans Saints and San Francisco 49ers when the
latter won after a touchdown in the closing seconds of the game and nailed a
spot in the NFC Championship Game made me cry like a baby! Then a painful and
unexpected loss for the New York Giants broke my heart into million pieces once the 49ers have been the subject of my affection since I was in my pre-teens. And
finally, there was the Super Bowl XLVI which this blog post is about.
In a crowded arena
where human beings can become demigods and divine heroes can turn into mere
mortals in the blink of an eye, New York Giants and New England Patriots, led by
their incredibly talented quarterbacks, engaged in a battle of titans. Madonna
embellished the event with her colossal performance during the intermission. The duel relentlessly continued until the victorious
team only affirmed their superiority after their opponent tried an unsuccessful
Hail Mary* in the last second of game. The gigantic Giants raised the trophy as
adrenaline ran through my body. What to say? How to
react? Eloquent silence and speechless discourse dictated their rules. Nothing but
passion and amazement were all the fans could feel. For the winners, happiness
and euphoria will stay for a long time as they are crowned and hailed by their
heroic deeds. For the losers, pain and frustration will hover and haunt them
for a while, but the pride of having done the best they could will eventually
settle down.
As for me, all I
can think is there is nothing better than this ecstasy only sports can provide, whether
your favorite team or player is playing or not. Addiction is inevitable. I can’t
wait for the next season. And this time I will wholly follow it!
*A very long pass
made in desperation as an attempt to score near the end of a half.
